The We Are Not Like Them Program is designed to support students through moments of change by focusing on skills that apply to any next step in life.
Self-Awareness & Identity
Participants explore who they are, what they value, and how their strengths connect to future opportunities. This foundation helps them make intentional, informed decisions about their path forward.
Life & Decision-Making Skills
From time management and goal setting to financial basics and personal responsibility, students learn skills that promote independence and reduce stress during major transitions.
Career & Pathway Exploration
Youth are introduced to multiple post-secondary options—including college, trades, entrepreneurship, military service, and workforce opportunities—so they understand that success comes in many forms.
Emotional Resilience & Mental Well-Being
Change can be overwhelming. We help participants develop coping strategies, confidence, and emotional tools that support mental health during periods of uncertainty and growth.
Learn to Earn! The Job-Getting Guidebook is a practical, easy-to-follow resource designed to help young adults confidently navigate the path to employment. Built as part of Hoops 4 Life’s 4 What’s Next framework, this guide walks readers through the essential skills needed to move from “looking for a job” to “landing the job.” From understanding personal strengths and career interests to preparing resumes, acing interviews, and developing workplace habits, this ebook breaks the process down into clear, manageable steps.
Whether a reader is entering the workforce for the first time, transitioning from school, or looking for a fresh start, Learn to Earn! provides real-world tips, reflection exercises, and encouragement to build confidence, independence, and long-term success. It’s more than a job guide—it’s a roadmap to purpose, stability, and the next chapter of life.

At Hoops 4 Life, we believe every young person deserves the chance to dream big and design a future filled with purpose. Our programs are built to nurture the whole child—mind, body, and spirit. From the basketball court to the classroom, from creative arts to life-readiness skills, we provide the tools, mentorship, and community support that help youth rise above challenges and step confidently into their future.
Through structured training, academic enrichment, and positive role models, students don’t just learn how to play the game—they learn how to lead, how to solve problems, and how to chase their goals with discipline and determination. Hoops 4 Life is more than a program; it’s a pathway to the life every child truly deserves.
A practical resource designed to help families support their child’s growth both on and off the court. This guide goes beyond drills and game strategy, offering parents tips on balancing academics with athletics, building healthy habits around nutrition and rest, and nurturing character traits like teamwork, discipline, and resilience. Whether your child is just starting out or playing at a competitive level, this e-book equips parents with the tools and encouragement to foster confidence, consistency, and a lifelong love for the game.

Transition age youth (16-24) in Connecticut experience significant gaps in behavioral health access, workforce engagement, and housing stability. Many youth transitioning from DCF, juvenile justice, or behavioral health system lack coordinated support. As a result, they experience crisis cycling, recidivism, unemployment, and homelessness. WE ARE Not Like Them addresses this service gap through a hour, trauma-informed stabilization and development model serving disconnected youth in Central Connecticut.
Target population Youth 16-24 who are disconnected from school and employment, experiencing mental health or substance use challenges, justice involvement, and/ or housing instability. Priority is given to youth transitioning from DCF, DMHA, juvenile justice, or special education services.
